The Davaar Wool Cycle

Each Davaar jersey begins from the ground up. Nurturing healthy soils is the first step toward growing healthy sheep – where our garments are truly made. From fibre scanning to finished garment, every stage of crafting your Davaar happens right here in New Zealand – a process we’re proud to keep local, thanks to the expertise of trusted legacy partners.

Where it all Starts

Fibre Selection
Not all fleeces make the cut. With over 50 years’ experience, Christchurch-based wool expert Don Morrison leads our wool fibre selection process using innovative scanning technology he co-developed. He identifies fibres with a range of qualities, however two of them are most important:

  • Coarse-Edge Micron – We select wool with round, uniform fibres. Rounder fibres create stronger yarn, reducing pilling and extending garment life – essential for a Davaar jersey, made to be an heirloom.

  • Curvature – this measures the degree of bend in the fibre — its springiness. High curve fibres produce resilient knitwear that retains its shape and can perform in all the elements.

Only sheep that meet Don’s exacting standards are selected to produce wool for Davaar knitwear. Each ewe is identified with an ear tag and mated with a select ram of similar high-quality fibre genetics. This careful pairing allows us to continuously improve and produce superior wool season after season.

The identified sheep are shorn separately, with the select wool clip baled and pressed in the Davaar Station woolshed ready for scouring.

Scouring
Select wool is sent to Woolworks in Timaru, where it is cleaned to ensure bright, white fibres are ready to absorb dye evenly.

Spinning & Dyeing
Cleaned wool travels to Woolyarns in Wellington, where it is spun and dyed into our exclusive Davaar colour palette – earthy, natural tones inspired by our surroundings.

Knitting
The dyed yarn is sent to Otago Knitwear in Dunedin, where skilled hands and machines craft each Davaar garment with precision. Every piece is thoroughly hand-finished to meet our standards.

Final garments return to Davaar Station for one final quality check by Kate, before your Davaar is packaged up in a light, recyclable cardboard box, ready to be delivered to your door. In summer, you’ll find them at Davaar HQ, at the entrance to Davaar Station near Te Anau. In winter, we pop up in Arrowtown from June through August.
